While patting a silent beat on your lap, teach the song "Morning Bells" by rote.
Play the song and invite the students to sing along while patting the beat on their lap.
Ask the students what they heard the second time through the song? (canon)
Instruct students to sing the words and tap the rhythm to discover the longer sounds. Ask the students on what words they sang the longer sounds? (hear and clear)
Play a C E G pattern on a glockenspiel or metallophone and have students echo. Explain that this short, repeated pattern is called an ostinato. When we accompany our song with an ostinato, it becomes even more fun and interesting!
Choose students to play the ostinato on the glockenspiel while the class sings the song again with the recording.
When the song and ostinato accompaniment are secure, challenge students to sing the song in canon.
