Teach the song one phrase at a time by having the teacher sing the solo while the class echoes. Encourage students to sing with high, light voices.
Have students tap the steady beat on their legs while singing.
Continue singing the song with new soloists, such as:
Students with brown eyes.
Students whose first name begins with a C.
Students who are wearing blue.
When students seem confident singing in small groups, invite a brave volunteer to sing the solos alone. Continue until all interested students have had an opportunity to sing a solo.
Teach the circle game. Note: The student who is It may substitute one's own name, if desired. Please think safety when playing this game. If space is limited, have students fast-walk during the chase.
Have students stand in a circle facing the center.
Designate one student as It. Hand that student a toy fish to carry. It stands outside the circle and starts singing the solos while walking around the outside of the circle. The rest of the class keeps the steady beat on their laps as they sing the echoes.
At the end of the song, It drops the toy fish behind the nearest student. That student picks up the item and then chases It around the circle until It returns to the original seat. If tagged, the former It moves to the center of the circle. The new It starts the game again, singing the solos.
