Review with the students that a quarter rest is a beat of silence. Say and tap the lyrics of the first verse. Show the quarter rests as you separate your hands. (students echo)
Play the song "Up on the Housetop." Prompt the students to listen as they tap the rhythm of the lyrics and show the quarter rests.
Explain the refrain is a repeated section at the end of each phrase or verse in a song. Play "Up on the Housetop" again and direct students to show a silent thumbs up when they hear the refrain of the song.
Guide students to learn the refrain of the song.
Explain that a verse is the section of a song in which the tune remains constant but the lyrics change with each repetition. Guide students to identify the number of verses in the song.
Invite students to sing "Up on the Housetop."
