Play a valentine game to identify rhythms, songs or instruments.
Materials
Valentines with simple musical problems written on the back of each.
Mailbox
Instructions
Echo-sing "Skinnamarink" one phrase at a time until the song is learned.
Add motions to the song.
Skinnamarink adink adink: L hand cups R elbow with forearm up, bouncing hand from wrist.
skinnamarink adoo: R hands cups L elbow with forearm up, bouncing hand from wrist.
I love you: Thumbs point to chest, both palms cover heart, then point to someone.
I love you in the mornin' : Bounce connected hands overhead.
and in the afternoon: Bounce connected hands under chin.
I love you in the evenin': Hug self, turning side to side.
and underneath the moon: Arms trace upward circle until hands connected overhead.
(smack!) At end of the song, two hands present a big, audible kiss!
Valentine Game: Obtain valentines for students.
On each valentine, draw or paste a simple musical problem. (Suggestions include a rhythm pattern, the words "Secret Song?" or a picture of a classroom instrument cut from a music catalog).
Place valentines in a makeshift mailbox.
Select four students to deliver four valentines from the mailbox as the song "Skinnamarink" is sung. (By the end of the song, the valentines are delivered to four new students.)
Each of the four new students solves the musical problem on their valentine (such as clapping a rhythm, identifying the Secret Song hum/sung by their teacher, or identifying a classroom instrument, etc.) If appropriate, the four students may help one another as a team.
These four students become the new "mail persons" and the game begins again. Play until each student has had a turn to receive and to respond to a valentine.
Perform song on Valentine's Day for relatives and friends.
