Goals:
Sing a holiday song.
Sing a song with expressive dynamics.
Learn harmony.
Instructions:
Play “Holly Jolly Christmas” for students and invite them to keep a beat on their lap while they listen.
Direct students in learning measures 8 - 24. Next, direct students in learning measures 25 - 40.
Once the phrases are learned, discuss the dynamic markings in the music (mp – mezzo piano, mf – mezzo forte, and f – forte.) Instruct students to sing the song while demonstrating the dynamics with their voices and their hands (hands are held close together for pp and far apart for f, etc.)
Invite students to sing “Holly Jolly Christmas” with the accurate expressive dynamics.
Optional: Teach students the harmony part.
